The definition of what love is has changed so much through history with the changing of time that no one knows exactly what love is anymore. Philosophers, writers, actors, and many others have explained what they think love is, but what is it really? What is your definition of love?
Is it butterflies in your stomach, giggles and blushing from a middle school girl after her first kiss, or that deep passionate relationship that you can really only share with one person in your lifetime?
I have a few pieces of advice to give when you are trying to decide who to love, how to love, or what love even means.
1. First, you must love yourself before you can truly love anyone else.
And I don't mean thinking that you are the most beautiful thing to ever grace the planet, but just loving yourself and accepting yourself even with your flaws and knowing that they are beautiful.
2. You must love others with no boundaries.
One of my favorite verses from the Bible is I Corinthians 13.4-8. It says, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." This verse is the perfect definition of pure, all-knowing, beautiful love.
3. You must write your own love story.
I don't care what anyone thinks. If you think you have love, trust it with all of your heart. Fight for it. Believe in it. When I was a little girl, I used to long to have a love like Cory and Topanga from the TV show, Boy Meets World. They were everything I thought was a perfect relationship, and although my love story went much differently from their's, Cory once taught me something about love that I will never forget: it doesn't matter how old you are or how insignificant other people may think your relationship is. If you have real love and you know it in your heart, fight for it.
He said: Mom listen, I haven't been together with Topanga for 22 years, but we have been together for 16. Okay, its a lot longer than most couples have been together. I mean when we were born, you told me that we used to take walks in our strollers together around the block. When we were 2, we were best friends. I mean, I knew everything about this girl. I knew her favorite color, I knew her favorite food. Then we got to be 6, and Eric made fun of me because it wasn't cool to have a best friend that was a girl. So for the next 7 years, I threw dirt at her. I like to call those the 'lost years.' And then when I was 13, Mom, she put me up against the locker and she kissed me. I mean, she gave me my first kiss. She taught me how to dance. She was always talking about these crazy things, and I never understood a single word she said. All I understood was that she was the girl I sat up every night thinking about. When I'm with her, I feel happy to be alive, like I can do anything, even talk to you like this. So thats what I think love is, Mom....when I'm better because she's here."
Maybe we should all listen to Cory.
Much love,
Shelby
